I think there's just so much to cover in regards to this event, that I'll have to do it in various posts. For now, I'll do the easiest and just link some various coverage the event's been receiving so far!
On our first day in NYC, I found out that the exhibit was featured in the current Time Out New York magazine ~ C & Poptart were kind enough to pick up a copy for me and lo and behold, look what they used! Now *that* was an amazing, unexpected welcome to the city ~ for Fashion Week no less :)
My friend Dianna from Starkers got a mention too and I was so happy to see that!

Here's part of the FIT brochure, and some of the original images within. Wednesday's face was morphed onto a stock museum photo for the Time Out feature ~ can't say I blame them at all, she *is* infinitely prettier than the mannequin!

I highly doubt I'll ever find all the articles linked to this as the press presence there was *huge*, but here are some that others have been kind enough to forward to me since the opening:

Here are more by the same photographer, including one of the lovely Miss Valerie Steele:

Cool article highlighting some of the pieces from the exhibit, I'm sooo humbled to have my own work included amoungst them!

Wild ~ Can't say I ever considered being on the same New York Society page as Rihanna, Anna Wintour, Valentino, etc... Scroll towards the bottom to see photos from the Gothic exhibit opening:

How cool is this article from *Brazil*? And they chose the Midnight Bustle photo to accompany it (go Mel & Nadya)!

*EDIT* - I just got an email from Sweden saying,
"I just thought you might like to know that Dr. Valerie Steele mentioned you today in a lecture at University of Stockholm.
The subject was Gothic: Dark Glamour, and she showed a picture of your Isabella coatdress."
Surreal! I can't wait to share my own photos from the event and tell you more about the adventures of Fashion Week in New York!

Date: 2008-09-12 06:44 pm (UTC)The coolest thing is this exhibit is done with a lot of respect and a genuine admiration for the aesthetic of the scene, and that totally comes across. It's helping a lot of people to look at "Gothic" in a new light :)
I'm glad you got your dress done early too ~ it would be awesome if everyone planned so far in advance ;) (Still got the picnic lurking in the back of my mind by the way ~ maybe the first half of October?)

Date: 2008-09-12 07:26 pm (UTC)But yes, "chain of events" is definitely an apt phrase! There was so much ~momentum~ in the air you could practically feel it... I'm hoping this will bring about lots of positive things for *many* of us :)

Date: 2008-09-12 07:22 pm (UTC)It was such a whirlwind ~ that picture was taken after I was interviewed for a fashion week tv show ~ while still catching my breath from an uncomfortably stuffed car ride!
Actually, I think you may have gotten some of the scraps from this outfit when I sent you pieces for future dollie creations :)

Date: 2008-09-12 07:54 pm (UTC)How nice is it that amoungst all the incredible designers there, this featured independent goth-scene ones? :)
I wish you'd been able to be at the opening ~ do at least be sure to check out the exhibit sometime. In all honesty, you'll probably have an even better chance to really soak it all in. They put so much work into all the different aspects of it!

Date: 2008-09-12 09:11 pm (UTC)I have to see about finding a way to check out the next one too since I think they had people covering the opening as well. There was so much press there, it was a huge challenge just trying to remember everyone that was doing interviews and photographs!

Date: 2008-09-12 08:37 pm (UTC)Hooray for witchy Fluevogs! I have a few pairs hid away (brown buckle suede, black and brown laced suede) from long ago when they were insanely cheap at the Newbury St. store.
I so look forward to more news of your weekend! It's like my thesis (that never happened because life took precedence over school) come to life :)
I'm especially happy to find out that historic clothing was included as an introduction, as I feel it's essential to understanding how and why we dress like we do.

Date: 2008-09-12 09:19 pm (UTC)Part of the exhibit is themed "The Cult of Mourning", I even loaned FIT a Victorian Mourning Shawl from my own collection to use... I agree it's really nice that they selected certain historical pieces as well ~ not only to show history and transition, but even for the fact that many of us love those antique treasures as well and even sometimes work them into what we wear!

Date: 2008-09-12 09:22 pm (UTC)There will certainly be more photos ~ I'm just trying to narrow them down a bit so the posts aren't HUGE. But, the other thing making it a challenge is wanting to tell so many stories that go along with each and every photo, and I need to make it all a bit more concise :)

Date: 2008-09-12 09:30 pm (UTC)Isn't the press on this amazing??? I can understand why though, it's a really special exhibit, and I think a lot of good feelings/intentions are behind it which comes though. It's just so nice to see Gothic represented *positively* for a long-overdue and much appreciated change of pace!

Date: 2008-09-12 10:34 pm (UTC)I'm going to have to figure out where to get copies of some of these myself ~ especially the magazines that I can remember sitting down (or standing!) and doing interviews with. Luckily, getting the "Time Out" was easy since it was already on the newsstands while we were there, but maybe check the website and see if they can be ordered?

Date: 2008-09-12 10:17 pm (UTC)I just want to say you have the BEST red carpet image, you look so wonderfully put together and beautiful!
Would you have happened to have saved any extra brochures? Maybe I could get FIT to send me one:P And would you mind if I repost these links and that scan in my journal?
I saw my photoshopped head on the Time Out New York website, and as I am flattered slightly it is more disturbing. Why the hell couldn’t they have used the original image with your beautiful coat. wtf!

Date: 2008-09-12 10:29 pm (UTC)You know how much I was wishing you could be there... I wish I could have just sent a hot air balloon out your way to pick you up and have you delivered right there on the red carpet ~ where I'm pretty sure you would have had a fairly well put together look yourself my dear! Thank you for the compliment ~ from you, it's a high one indeed :)
I can't believe I didn't pick up more of the brochures than I did, but I *did* make sure that I got one for you, so I'll get that mailed out to you next week :) How lovely is it that in the few photos they used in the brochure that yours was one of them? I think it's amusing that it appears right next to the Victorian mannequin ;)
Of course you can save the scans and repost the links ~ I actually *wanted* to collect these for you!
