The 2010 Oscar nominations were announced today and "Coraline" is nominated for an Academy Award as Best Animated Feature Film! The chillingly charming tale of friendship, family, and the other family was written by Neil Gaiman, and directed by Henry Selick.

Remember this photo of Neil Gaiman and Amanda Palmer (with Amanda in the silk bustle dress, made from antique silk my great-grandmother brought back from Japan) at the recent Golden Globes afterparty?:

The photo was taken by Heather Selick, wife of Henry Selick. Henry, as director of both "Coraline" and "The Nightmare Before Christmas"... puts the dire in director. ;)

Good luck to the entire Coraline team! http://www.coraline.com

Today is being spent putting the *vamp* in re-vamping an antique silk chiffon beaded spiderweb tunic that will be turned into a new, full length dress. Here's hoping I can do everything required without losing too many of the original beads which are already trying to make their break for freedom!

Fantastic :) I've actually yet to see it, really must remedy that soon...

Hope the beads don't give you too much trouble!

The beads will likely be more of a challenge once the seam ripping stops and the sewing begins. I just wish they'd been originally sewn on the way I tend to sew them on, then the threat of them coming off upon mere sight of them wouldn't be so strong. I know chain-stitching is quick, but when you're doing something so elaborate, the extra time and effort *is worth it*.

You should definitely see the film! I'm only sorry that you would have missed the opportunity to see it large-scale in the theatres, as they originally showed it in 3D. I'm not always the biggest fan of 3D for 3d's sake, but in the case, it really worked. Let me know what you thought of it once you do :)

I doubt I'd have been able to have seen it in 3D anyway, as my local theatres didn't show it at all, let alone in 3D! (I've never seen a movie in 3D, I don't think it really took off over here the way it did in the states, though it's getting a lot more popular now)

Though maybe if it wins an Oscar the new 3D IMAX theatre in Bristol will show it again...

I have a vintage beaded dress that needs repairs here and there. Care to give any pointers on how to make sure they don't come loose later on?

And on another note, I keep thinking about 2008 Comic Con (I think it was 2008), and I escaped from the booth for 2 hours to see the panel Neil Gaiman was doing. As I was waiting to get into the ballroom, I heard a soft voice behind me say, "excuse me," and then a hand on my shoulder, so I moved. A man with short curly hair and a black leather jacket stepped past me and went into the ballroom. I thought, "Hey! I've been waiting in line!" Then I saw the side of his face and almost squealed, "Neil Gaiman just touched me!"

It depends a lot on how the beads were attached. The challenge with this one is they were put on with a chain stitch... meaning if a thread gets pulled, they just all start coming off. I would never personally sew them on that way, because it just seems like a bit of a wasted effort. If you sew the beads on individually, and knot the thread every several beads, you'll be much better off. Think of it like a pearl necklace where if it's been knotted properly, if it breaks you might lose one, or at most a few beads, whereas if it's been hastily strung, if it breaks, you'll have entire heap of pearl beads on the floor.

Neil and I were just talking about that jacket recently :) He's a charmer, that's for sure... And he apparently speaks in words of light! (http://kambriel.livejournal.com/248145.html) I'm glad you had that experience, and that you didn't yell at him for cutting ahead of you in line ;)

Is that the self-same tunic that survived a tug-of-war with a flight attendant? If so, I dare say your caring administrations should be far more favorable!

No, that one was one that I had fully beaded by hand (so no antique just yet!). This one *looks* more like it went through that situation though. The one I beaded (back in 1998, I think?) is actually doing great :)
