The beautiful black on black striped fabric I use looks like it's no longer being made due to the mill going under. Quite sad, as I do try and select fabrics from domestic manufacturers when possible to help keep these businesses thriving, but fewer and fewer fabrics are being made in the US independently anymore ~ where once so many were produced. I guess now there is one less company doing so.

This should also teach me to remember to make something for myself at some point out of favourite fabrics before they disappear altogether... I had even just come up with three new men's items to make from it as well.

[livejournal.com profile] mbarrick, there's enough to create the tailcoat for your wedding, but it looks like that will be the final piece from this material ~ so much like Elaine, you'll have a very unique outfit!

Ironically, here's a lovely new photo (modeled by Acid PopTart) of the Isabella Coatdress in the aforementioned material:

Edit: ~ I managed to locate some of the last remaining yardage of this, so a few more lovely pieces from this can still be made! :)

Isn't it? I wish I'd kept one for myself, but I figured I could "always make another one later"...

Just last night I was going through some small scraps of it, and thinking what a nice fluidity and drape it had.

What a stunning outfit. It's so sad that the mill went under. I never thought about American made fabric before, but it's definitely an interesting and sad topic. I'm sorry that beautiful fabric is gone now. It really is stunning.

Edit: You should do something with the scraps. Bookmarks or ribbon on jewelry... it really is just gorgeous fabric.

Well then, I will cherish my skirt and coatdress all the more. :)

And agreed about doing something with the scraps.

Gorgeous model, dress and setting!

It's a terrible shame that we lose such quality things because people think price before value. Most of my clothing is second hand and thrift on top of the vintage. I do tend to hit up H&M twice a year for work clothes, but that is my only weakness as far as mass production is concerned.

I feel your pain - it seems just when I finally find a good source for materials, they either discontinue the product I like most, or else the company itself goes under. Not a very encouraging state of affairs in the US *or* Canada right now. On the bright side though I suppose it *does* make for some very exclusive garments!

It's a longstanding curse. I've dealt with it as long as I've been making things. I just wish companies when they find out something will stop being made, that if they have customers who regularly ordered it, could find a way to give them a heads up first in case they'd like to stock up on some extra before it's all gone.

I understand your pain with using domestic products and companies. I design and sell my own line of cards. I only deal with small family owned print shops to help them stay in business. It is hard though because often the customers do not understand why my cards cost more than other companies. I refuse to outsource to china even if it means that I make less profit!

Good for you! I guess that's the thing, a lot of BIG businesses are focused so much on the bottom line that they forget to give any value to other... ~values~, and I think success can be defined in different ways that don't all come down to dollars and cents.

I've been offered in the past by corporations in China to create my clothing ~ one even wanted to open a "Kambriel" shop there, and I turned it down 100%. I just am not willing to give up the level of personal expression, artistry, and energy that goes into being able to actually have a direct hand in the creation of what I'm putting out into the world.

Plus, supporting independent businesses when you have your own independent business just makes *sense* ;)

There are also a few images of my wife in the same dress at the Edward Gorey Garden Party here in Portland taken by Circle 23.

Yes, I saw those ~ I really should do a post specifically for them at some point :) She looked so completely elegant in it, and I loved this entire set of pictures!
