Clever Crows & Blood Oranges

The other evening we made clove-studded pomanders. The best oranges I could find for them (and they need to be organic, as otherwise they won't dry out & preserve properly) were blood oranges which seemed an excellent nod to the Sicilian part of my heritage! Their fresh scent is such a lovely awakening for the senses in an otherwise frosty Wintertime:

I can smell the oranges. :0 )
One year I made them with tangerines and they dried perfectly. Worked in a kitchen supply place that had bulk spices. Cloves in giant tubs.

We made those in elementary school. "Awakening for the senses" is definitely the right way to describe it. My grandmother held onto one that I made when I was young for years and years.
