The great backyard bird count
Feb. 18th, 2011 11:58 amToday harkens the beginning of the Great Backyard Bird Count, and as a rather proud Robin pranced directly in front of me, I figured it was as good a sign as any to participate.
In just fifteen minutes of gazing outside the office window, we spotted eight different species including:
2 Northern Cardinals
13 American Robins
1 Eastern Towhee
3 American Pipits
1 Northern Mockingbird
2 Mourning Doves
2 Blue Jays
1 American Crow
It's rather easy to participate, since you can add your zip code and it will give you a list (with links to images/sounds/etc...) of the birds likely to be in your area. If you think you might enjoy taking part, the website is: http://www.birdsource.org/gbbc/
We didn't spot any grackles today, but even though they're "common", isn't their iridescent plumage lovely? I actually saw some buttons yesterday that looked like this :)
