O.K., this needs to happen... A "Miss Lovett" photo with a similar cake (in the "bubbling cauldron" stage), while wearing this dress:

By the way, the dress was created entirely from "stash" materials that I already had on hand... I created it as a bit of a challenge to not have to go out and buy anything for it, and am so happy I did, because it put lots of treasured, but not yet utilized fabrics and trimmings to use and I think came out even better than it would have had I just bought something new to make it with :)

That's stunning! And what an elegant use of "stash" fabrics!

(Tho' I know that your fabric stash is far, far better than the rest of ours! ) ;)

WOW.. I am really impressed that you made that dress at all, let alone constructed it out of seamstress' "spare parts"! Love the red sleeves.. and the dangling lace on the overskirt!! I am never throwing scraps away again.. :D

I figured it would be very much in the spirit of Miss Lovett to do so since you know, "Times is hard" ;)

The drippy overskirt (for the underskirt ~ yes, irony) is probably my favourite part of the entire dress ~ I'm glad you noticed it!

Wow, neat. I especially love the sides of the skirt, and the sleeves. I really envy your talent.

Also <3 moire taffeta. I like the photographic effect but I'd also love to see these in full color as well.

The sleeves have a slight leg o'mutton shape that you can't see as well on the dressform, but should show up better while being worn, and the ruffles at the side of the skirt are one of my favourites as well ~ they make this style a lot of fun to wear :)

Moire taffeta is for me now what crushed velvet used to be. I love the play of light it has! Hopefully I'll get some more proper photos of it soon, but the dress is itself all black with just the tiniest touches of crimson at the lower sleeves and some lacing in the back.

Thank you Kat :)

Now let's play "what do you recognize"?

The ultra-delicate spiderweb/rose black lace used for the overlay of the lower sleeves? It's the lace you gave as a gift last year that I said I'd have to wait for just the perfect use before cutting into it! And look carefully at the lower hem of the underskirt... tassel fringe procured on one of our visits (when we found the vast quantities of "dead stock" black trims)!

The ruffles were serendipitous and happened because I didn't have enough fabric to make them all out of just the embroidered organza. I ended up doing a mix of materials to "stretch it out" and the end result had even more richness of texture!

Oh, it's driven me batty in the past when I thought about how if someone paints an image of a gown it can be considered high "art", but if you actually created a real gown, and made it to fit an actual person, that was somehow "less than". You and I both know how *wrong* that really is!

I remember an exhibit on needlework in Salem called "Painting with Thread" ~ and thought that was a lovely way of putting it into words.

Thank you so, so much!

I actually agree with you in that I think this is one of my personal favourites as well! I think it's due to using a lot of favourite pieces of fabrics and such that I've been holding on to... I've only tried it on briefly once or twice, but as soon as I put it on, it just feels so ~grand~.

Love it, I'm so into beautiful trims and this is quite a creation!

For some reason, after seeing the mixer and this now I have a song about meat pies going on in my head.

The trim I used at the forearm of the sleeve (right above the red sections) is so much more elaborate in person... it's actually in shades of deep metallic pewter and bronze with a very Renaissance looking beadwork design.

Oh that is beautiful!
And I think forcing yourself to use stash materials was a great idea. You were probably able to come up with combinations you'd never have thought of otherwise. I think that's why I have so much fun making clothing for the dolls I make - I just get out the fabrics from the stash and let them guide me in the right direction.

I'm really trying to do that more and more, because I just can't stand the thought of having all that *potential* sitting in neatly folded piles when it could *become* something. Did you ever go to any of the Hell nights at ManRay in the '90's? Sometimes we'd vend there, and I always loved coming up with all sorts of little things for the booth made from various odds and ends I had on hand. Seeing what resulted from my forays into the fabric bins usually ended up being more interesting and vastly more personally gratifying than going to the store and shopping for supplies ever could!

there is no such thing as too much lace!

C's dad told me something to that effect ~way back when~ (I was frilling up an otherwise plain white oxford as a gift for C), and it totally took me off guard coming from a retired Marine master sergeant!

I'd be happy to help create something out of your old lace stockpiles anyday... But you know, it would probably be most ~sensible~ if I had to come up there and sort through them with you ;)

Much joy to you for the new year as well!

What a major compliment ~ thank you!!

It's one of my all-time favourites too ~ somehow everything just came together even better than I'd imagined... especially that drippy lace overskirt. I never knew ~what~ I'd do with the piece of fabric (a gift from C several years ago), but I think it definitely fell into the right purpose :)

It makes me think of something you said not too long ago about being able to just do what you feel is right (opposed to keeping it "as ordered") ~ having that kind of freedom can really make a massive difference!
