Perhaps one of the worlds most terrifying birthday cakes!

Vat of blood... I mean, red velvet ;)

Now, is this a bubbling cauldron of a cake, or what?

The worst cake in London:

It was the oh so perfectly, somewhat congealed drop that fell on the counter which sealed the deal.

Oh, the white frosting is a delightfully diabolical touch. It looks so sweet and innocent on the outside...

I actually would have loved to do a better job decorating it, but that's what you get when I'm half-asleep!

Can you imagine making it again, but this time with purple frosting and solid black, twisty candles?

I approve your choice of purple sprinkles/jimmies. I've always been fascinated with the combination of purple and red. It's odd, a little bit jarring, but it works.

Between red hair, and purple being my life-long favourite colour, it's pretty much an impossible combination for me to avoid ;)

How punny you are!

I was thinking of how you would have layered fondant over it, and all the possibilities for "themes" :)

Luckily it's powdered rather than liquid, so not as much as you'd think!

Looks so nummy! I love red velvet cake. That's what I made for J for his birthday earlier this month (well, in the form of cupcakes, of course!). We'll have to have more red velvet cake in 2 weeks!

Yum, red velvet. If that tastes even half as good as it looks (and really, how could it not? It's red velvet cake) it is the making of a very happy birthday indeed. I love the Burton-esque sprinkles and candles, too.

Give Curse birthday wishes from J and I!

Perhaps a trip to Alice's or Sugar Sweet Sunshine is in order during your upcoming visit.

I will absolutely give him your birthday wishes ~ thanks!

It looks like the days we'll be up there, when you'll be in town as well are going to be the 10th & 11th, so we shall definitely figure something out for then :) Sadly, the mini-show is planned for the 12th, but if J would like to "see the circus", he's be more than welcome to come with us!

My ex, who is also my best friend; when I met her, before we started going out, we went to her parents' place for her birthday, and her stepdad who used to be a chef made her a pavlova as a birthday cake.

He used red food coloring in it, just to see what would happen.

As it turned out, the outside crust went a deep grey color, and the INSIDE was the most gorgeous red.. and, being a pav, it was all goopy and soggy and slimy, this wonderful red goo oozing out of the broken black shell of meringue. It was the best pavlova ever made. We dubbed it the Metal Pav.

Your cake is almost as awesome. That's pretty high praise y'know :P

I made an absinthe Pavlova for my own birthday... I just left it classic white though, so it looked normal, but the taste itself was quite a surprise ;)

I like the idea of colouring them though... I bet doing a lavender shade would also get that grey effect on the outside.

LOL! Awesome. Reminds me of Steel Magnolias in a way: in the film one of the chacaters makes a groom's cake in the shape of an armadillo - in grey icing with a red velvet cake interior. The other characters of course thought it was completely gross. I've said for years that the people who made the cake for the movie should have kept just a little uncoloured batter to fold in right before baking - would have made a fantastically meatlike marbling effect!

:P

absolutely divine! our wedding cake was a red velvet with whipped cream cheese frosting. we didn't have purple sprinkles, though! or candles. just 3 live red roses on top, and cake toppers that were so large and heavy they had to sit next to the cake.

nicely done!

What a beautiful and delicious sounding wedding cake! I love the idea of having the fresh flowers decorating it as well... Some friends who got married last year used rosebush pots as the centerpieces so their guests could bring them home to plant afterwards. Happily the one we planted is doing beautifully with tons of roses which I figure is an incredibly positive symbol of their marriage :)
