Gothic: Dark Glamour

kambrielI've been waiting since August of last year to make a formal announcement, and happily at long last, here goes...
I am ~beyond honoured~ to announce that some of my work is going to be included in a major museum exhibition on "Gothic: Dark Glamour" to be held at The Museum at FIT in New York City later this year. A book is also being published to coincide with the show, so those of you who can't attend can still see about getting a copy when it comes out. The curator, Valerie Steele, even did an interview with me for the book, so a few of my words/thoughts may creep into its pages as well!

It brings me such happiness to know this scene I've called home for so long is finally getting its due in the form of a major exhibit showing off what we've all known for years ~ the exquisite and decadent, timeless beauty that can be found within the Gothic aesthetic. To be invited personally to be part of this after having spent a majority of my life trying to create things of beauty for those who love this aesthetic as much as I do, means so much to me.
Here's the humbling/surreal part:
"The names of some of the other designers who will be participating in the exhibition are: Givenchy, Christian Lacroix, John Galliano for Galliano, Olivier Theyskens, Alexander McQueen, Rick Owens, Shaun Leane, Simon Costin, Simon Thorogood, Shelley Fox, Thierry Mugler, Hussein Chalayan, Valentino, Yves St. Laurent, Yohji Yamamoto, Comme des Garcons, Rodarte, Gattinoni Couture, Boudicca, and Ann Demeulemeester, along with a number of private collectors and some Museums."
Wow. I think the coolest part about this is that they are also including an independent representative of/from/for the scene so at least in some small way, we can celebrate the underground roots of where the inspiration for some designers actually comes from. I know it can be frustrating how many magazines, shows and films will feature "Gothic" looks from Mega-designers, without featuring the work of actual gothic designers as well (those of us who are still in direct contact with our customers/friends, who create original looks, and live in a state where each and every order received really does make a huge difference and a real personal impact on our ability to carry on). I just hope this can be an opening in the door to make giving a nod to the originators more of a reality for all of us in the future.
The exhibition dates are scheduled for September 6 - February 21 (the galleries are closed on Sundays, Mondays & official holidays). I'm most certainly going to be there, and thinking this may be a *very good excuse* for a group get together in the Big Apple come September!
