When [livejournal.com profile] madamekat and I were antiquing together recently, we lucked into finding some beautifully bound editions of century old magazines which we were able to get for a song, and whilst pouring through the pages at home ~ reading much of it aloud and laughing quite heartily at the quaint absurdities and utter charm, we stumbled upon this ad...

Yes, the part about the "inflatable life preserver" was the clencher! Immediately the wheels in my mind started turning and I just had to bring this forth into reality with a visual representation!!! So I enlisted the help of my adorable friend [livejournal.com profile] bluegirlb, and here's the grand result:

We'll be making these into t-shirts!!!

Hee! Oh, I will absolutely have to get one of those shirts.

(And I want an inflatable bustle!)

Isn't the description just so funny??? We practically fell over laughing when we read it for the first time together!

Yes, you need one of these (both the bustle *and* the shirt)!

LMAO!!!!

I have a great 1800's newspaper page hanging framed in my bathroom. It has great things like the "amazing electric corset" which can apparently cure any illness known to man. It also has an ad for cigars that cure athsma!

The ads are so over the top ~ I love them!

I've already looked up where they're located too! ;)

I wish you'd been there with us pouring through all these pages of ads, and letters to the editor... you would have enjoyed it as much as we did, I'm certain!

You know... next time I come see you, it would be ~quite~ sensible of me to bring my inflatable air bustle along ;)

It's exciting that it all came together so quickly ~ we only found these books a little over a week ago and they were a tenth the price Kat had seen them on eBay for!

Haha, and now I see a rouge pixel in the corner! I'm excited to see the finished product. This is more or less precisely the image that popped into my head when I read "life-preserver", so really, all I did was trace onto paper what you put into my head. ;)

It's funny how many illustrations could be born from that one ad alone... even the part about the travelling pillow ~ can't you just see the lady travelling by train, with some dapper gentleman resting his head on her bustle? She'd look aghast and shocked, he'd be fast asleep looking perfectly serene and content :)

They certainly didn't specify that you would be the one benefiting from the pillow feature in the ad, now did they? ;)

Hilarious!!!

That sort of reminds me, when I was at my grandmother's house recently, we found a reproduction of a Sears catalog from 1900. It had many interesting (and often humorous) items, but nothing like this.

This magazine hailed from Philadelphia ~ maybe they had a bit more of a "colourful attitude"!

Personally, I'm thrilled the Eureka hailed from Boston!

Now there's a project for my dad...

He's really good with rubber mouldings - he'll think I'm nuts but he's known that for years ;p

It is actually a great idea, I'm sort of surprised it never caught on as I've certainly had experience with travelling with peticoats and crinolines and bustles and know what a pain it is and how much space they take up!

And it had me in hysterics at the idea of it being used as a inflation device! That has got to be one of the best adverts in the history of advertising :)

Hey, if you're nuts, it had to come from somewhere ~ right?

I think they sound quite useful! As a matter of fact, I bet we could come up with a few more uses for them ;)

Maybe I should wear one when you get me on a horse ~ extra padding!

I think she really captured the twisted humour of it!

I can only wonder... did the ladies back then find it half as absurd a statement? Or was it all quite sensible sounding?

Awww, that is FABULOUS!!! And I *love* T's interpretation of the idea -- if you wind up making a girly-fit XL, I am TOTALLY ALL OVER IT -- must have t-shirt!

the beauty of the bustle is that its very largeness conceals just about any natural flaw! plus, a ginormous behind = visually smaller everything else. ;)

I don't know how I missed this post when you made it, but I am SO THERE for one of those shirts.

Those bustles sound like the perfect accessory for convergence this year. ;)
