Gothic: Dark Glamour
September 5, 2008 through February 21, 2009

Amazon is now taking pre-orders for the hardback book commemorating the upcoming "Gothic: Dark Glamour" exhibit at the Museum at FIT... I am still so humbled and honoured to have some of my work included in this show, and can't wait to see how the book turns out! The book's normal retail price will be $45, and it's currently being offered for pre-sale at only $29.70, so you might want to order a copy early to get an excellent deal... Here's the link should you wish to pre-order a copy:

Also, the Museum at FIT website has just announced the show in their "upcoming exhibits" section (you'll need to scroll down the page a bit):

I think this part sounds *particularly* exciting:

"An introductory gallery will focus on the origins of gothic style, which have inspired both designers and goths. The Victorian cult of mourning, for example, will be illustrated by actual mourning dresses, veils, and momento mori jewelry. The main gallery space will be designed as a labyrinth, featuring iconic themes such as Night, with black evening dresses; the Ruined Castle, with fashion inspired by gothic images of the Dark Ages, ruins, and fragments; and the Laboratory, where futuristic fashion "monsters" are created. Other themes include Veils and Masks, Mirrors, and the Haunted Palace – the last of which draws on Edgar Allan Poe’s architectural metaphor for a disturbed mind."

This should be incredible!

I truly hope as many of you as possible will be able to attend the show in person (I'll start putting together some plans for a gathering of friends in NYC this September to celebrate the opening of the event in the coming month or so) ~ and of course, please be sure to let me know if you want my help with any decadent custom outfits to wear for the opening :)

all my best,
~ Kambriel

I'm glad you'll be there! Do you think you'll be coming up for the opening weekend, or some other time?

It depends on when I can get off work. I'm trying for the opening weekend though. Have to keep my fingers crossed.

When the show was first announced, I thought I'd never make it down to New York to see it...but now it turns out I'm moving there in September! This is definitely going on my list of things I must see once I'm there.

I really hope I'll be in New York before the show ends so I can see it. What an incredible opportunity and honor. I'm so happy for you!

I hope so too ~ is there any chance it would be when I'm there? You'll have to let me know when you're going to be out this way regardless ~ we definitely need some time to hang out :)

Well, we're definitely not going to be there in September. I don't know that I'd be able to handle a flight to NYC with a 2 month old! :P

We aren't going for xmas (we've made it clear that family will have to come to us this year) so we'll have to see what the new year brings. Hopefully before Feb, but with the little one, every thing is up in the air. :)

We are going to try our best to make it down for the day. Such a wonderfully exciting thing!
I do hope the professors in who looked at me funny in 2002 when I was talking about gothic fashion in a grad level course think better of the things I was saying back then, due to this exhibit :p

I think this exhibit is going to be an excellent opportunity to highlight the beautiful, inspiring sides of the Gothic scene ~ a nice contrast to all the mainstream media out there that gets what it's all about so totally wrong...

You and C should definitely come ~ it will just be a short drive and maybe if you're up for it we could come up and see your new place afterwards :)

I wonder how much it would cost to get to NYC for the opening... and for a sweet little outfit... hee!!

Ooh, good thought! Is anyone else from MA planning on going? I was thinking it might be cheaper to catch the train in, given gas prices...

From: [identity profile] kambriel.livejournal.com
If you want least expensive, bus (Peter Pan) might be the best route ~ especially compared to train which can be pretty costly.

It does indeed look like some of the MA contingent will be coming though, so as the time draws nearer perhaps you'll be able to work something out :)

You could come and drag Carolee with you... (positive thinking!)

Otherwise, perhaps a long layover on your way to Whitby would enable you to catch the show?

From what I've read, the book looks like it's going to have tons of gothic art and decadence within, so I've got high hopes it will be a treasure!

What I love is how they really are going the extra mile to make this special ~ the exhibit set up sounds incredible ~ like a place you could quite happily get lost in.

Having read the more thorough press release, it's even more amazing than it sounds now! You should definitely try and at least get a copy of the book ~ if it's anything close to the exhibit, it will be well worth it.

perhaps you could sneak one of mine in...

Don't think it didn't occur to me ;)

Ooh, yay, I'm ordering myself a copy! I'd love to go see the exhibit in person, but tragically, there's this huge mass of land between San Diego and New York City.

Even if I don't get the chance to go to the opening and celebrate with all you lovely folk, I will still to see it. Perhaps I can convince a few friends into traversing to the land of NYC for my birthday (which just happens to be right before Gothmas ;D).

I'm so very excited for you! Congrats again!

Planes that can make that abundant distance short :) Hopefully you'll find a good deal around your birthday ~ that would be an excellent way to celebrate.

I wish it were possible for ~everyone~ who wants to see it to come. I've read a bit more about the show itself, and it really is shaping up to be something special. I'm quite happy they're releasing the book to accompany it though ~ that will make it easier to bare once the exhibit closes as a way to keep it going at least in the imagination. I'm so grateful to be involved!

Sadly, I have Meniere's disease affecting my left ear, it makes flying not-so-fun; which is how we actually discovered I had it after flying out and back to visit my dad's stepmother in Italy. Luckily, I've only had one other attack since then. :D

We'll just have to play it by ear *pun intended* regarding the trip. I am certain the book will be a great consolation prize for those of us who may not be able to see the exhibit's beautifulness in person.
