I recently made a one of a kind Theda Gown with lacing in the back, from a combination of vibrant red burnout velvet on an organza base, and this great heavy netting with an abstract open weave cobwebby texture (I wish you could make it out better in the photos ~ it's really something in person!) for vampyremermaid ~ a fabulous woman with a gift for making exquisite handcrafted crowns.

I sent the gown to her in England and it arrived in a matter of just a few days! I received the sweetest response from her, and wanted to share a little of it here :)

Dear Kambriel -

I got home from a dull and boring day at work to find - *** had cooked me a chinese meal and poured me a glass of wine - and then he told me about your box which had just arrived this morning! I had to try the dress on then and there - IT'S SO FANTASTIC !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Totally fabulous - the colour, the fabric, every thing! Now I need a splendid occasion to wear it to, or any opportunity really! It's just so theatrical and fantastic!

Anyway - thanks again for my beautiful dress, I must find a way to wear it out as soon as possible! - I wanted to ring you then and there..!

Actually it was a photo of you in your white spiderweb Theda that inspired this to be made! And just so you know, I adore you too :) You even came to mind when I found these fabrics... they're a good Jola-red :)

I have actually been getting some very sweet follow up emails recently, and that is *so* nice. I don't know if people realize just how much those kind words that only take a few seconds to write can mean to someone. It makes me think of the "old days" when people took the time to write thank you notes. :)

The brocade Midnight Bustle, right? We can make it to your specifications and it will be lovely. It will be good to take less in at the waist where the darts normally are, so that the difference in proportion (or lack thereof) between the waist and the chest isn't as noticable. We'll work on it with you!

I love burn-out velvet because of it's combination of shadowy semi-sheerness of the backing fabric, and the weight, drape, and luxury that the velvet gives.

And how would you know I had pre-Raphaelites on my mind? Of course for a true pre-Raph, the colour would need to be a bit stranger, something that couldn't quite be named :)
